LaxVOX and SOVT Vocal Development Exercises
Does your voice get tired easily when singing in rehearsals or performances, or during home practice? Have you been told you need to sing with more consistency? Do you have issues with “nasal” singing, or have been told to raise your soft palate?
Originally developed in Finland as a vocal therapy device to help patients recover from serious vocal issues such as vocal nodules/polyps, frozen vocal cords, significant muscular interference and so forth, LaxVOX (the KING of Semi-Occluded Vocal Tract exercises, such as humming, lip trills, and skinny straws) is ideally suited as a tool for those who use their voice extensively as a singer or public speaker [Barbershoppers and Sweet Adelines, for example!!] – and it addresses all the issues and more. Offered in sessions 1 and 6.
In this 90-minute workshop:
  • Singers will learn a set of basic recommended daily LaxVOX exercises and how to do them each correctly for maximum vocal health and development - and as a basic warm up routine prior to rehearsals and performances.
  • Singers will learn to find and use their "TARGET VOICE" - the best, most “natural” voice within the singer’s anatomic and physiologic capabilities.
  • Each participant who needs one, will receive a simple LaxVOX Tube device and a bottle of water at no cost. Though not required, those interested, may want to consider purchasing commercial LaxVOX tubes, PocketVOX  or PocketVOX/MaskVOX – available near registration at the Sing-Gevity booth (the only US distributor of these Turkish-made devices) this weekend!

How to Get Yourself to Declutter and Organize  (when you don't want to)
A common complaint heard is "I know I have the music somewhere, but I don't know where!" The backbone of information in this class is Pam’s book “Sidetracked Home Executives: from pigpen to paradise” which has sold more than a million and a half copies and is still available in bookstores today after 40 years. The 3x5 card file system in the book has helped hundreds of thousands to organize household chores and will be shared in this class.
Pam says, “You can’t organize clutter…well you can but your home will look and smell like a Goodwill store.” She’ll inspire you to go home and look at your stuff with new eyes. Clutter causes chaos and clutter in the living areas of the home are in direct relationship to how organized your closets, cupboards and drawers are. She’ll help you reduce your stash of stuff by sharing stories from Project CHAOS (Can’t Have Anyone Over Syndrome) where she went into over a hundred homes across the country sponsored by local newspapers and television.

It's about the Music, or Is It? How to BE a Masterful Director
As director you have an enormous responsibility as the primary person inspiring your chorus’ success. It is a pressure-filled, highly-demanding role and one that is critically important for the chorus’ joy, happiness and growth toward excellence. Though we naturally expect our directors to be technically skilled and knowledgeable, your most powerful impact actually comes from who you “be”, not what you “do”. How you show up, how you model presence, vulnerability and resiliency and even how you speak is critical to creating a vibrant chorus culture of growth and success. This session will help inspire your “being” journey to mastery, remove interferences to help you sustain a personal position of strength, balance and positive leadership. Come with an open mind and heart. This could well be the class that positively shifts you and your chorus culture forever.

Keep Your Hands To Yourself
Many of us have received well-intentioned advice about selling the song through use of faces and bodies. Too often, this results in too much hand movement to the point of distracting the audience. This class will explore what we as barbershop performers are trying to do on stage, and then see if it is possible to succeed in our purpose without the use of our hands. Class will include interaction, discussion and experimentation. Class offered twice.
FACULTY: Roger Mills TARGET AUDIENCE: Quartets, Everyone

Come ready to clap, tap and stomp your way through quarter notes, eighth notes, and triplets… and learn the importance of subdivisions and feeling the pulse. Sing in Barbershop Style
There are a thousand things you can do with a song; come learn the critical things you have to do in order for the song to be barbershop. If you don’t use these five, you cannot succeed in singing barbershop. We will also explore a second Ah Hah and trap -- just because a chart is written in the barbershop style, it doesn’t mean that you are singing it in the barbershop style. This class will help you understand what barbershop is, and how to use your new understanding of the barbershop style to move from being a "notes and words" singer to a singer who gives the barbershop song its due. This class is for everyone from novices to experts.
