From Renee..."I love learning new tricks for the usual singing issues and seeing old friends and making new ones. Especially a big thanks to those who put this together and the faculty and for sharing it with the SWEET Adelines! Thank you Harmony College Northwest!!"

HCNW Songs

Another fun feature of Harmony College Northwest is learning songs you can sing in performances, or in gatherings with other barbershoppers.

In 2011, we featured four songs: our national anthems, The Star Spangled Banner and Oh, Canada, plus two songs emblematic of both organizations,  How We Sang Today, and Keep The Whole World Singing.

For the songs you might not already know, we have sheet music and learning tracks ready for you to print and download. You will given the link to these once you have registered and PAID IN FULL for HCNW (either by check or through PayPal) . "Section rehearsals" of the song will be held on Friday afternoon.

In addition, sheet music will be available upon arrival for you to purchase for the men’s polecats and several SAI standards--so you can grab three of your newest best friends and sing away!

Still more singing!

It's "tag heaven" at HCNW! It's not the least bit unusual to hear groups of men and women singing tags every evening, between classes, and during meals. Don't be shy about it; ask them to teach one to you, too!

Quartets will entertain you with a song from their repertoire at the drop of a hat...all you have to do is ask!

And when all else fails, see if anyone around knows a polecat song or an SAI song. There's got to be SOMETHING you all know!

There will be a session to practice polecats on Friday night, after the show, and several other classes that feature LOTS of singing.

2011 Shows and Special Events

Vocal Spectrum

Tuition to HCNW comes with several performances included. For 2011, these included...

...Friday evening, where we started the weekend off with a bang at Schneebeck Concert Hall and heard The New Originals, Northwest Vocal Project Chorus and several talented local quartets. The "cherry on the top" was the return of the HCNW Ice Cream Social!

Saturday night was our "really big shew" featuring our headliner quartet, Vocal Spectrum. The evening starts with our second annual Mixed Quartet Contest, followed by an awesome show from Vocal Spectrum. Then we wrapped it all up with a "Parade of Quartets" from the HCNW ranks back over at the UPS Rotunda.

Don't forget the Afterglows either!! Late Friday and Saturday evenings, everyone was invited to the HCNW Afterglows. No-host beverages and snacks, plus tags, music, and more tags!!

2011 Mixed Quartet Contest

Mixed Quartet ContestHere is information about our 2nd Annual Mixed Quartet Contest that was held on Saturday night:

  • Sign-up to sing in the Mixed Quartet Contest when you get your workshop material on Friday.
  • All quartets MUST be mixed gender, and can be either 3 to 1 or 2 to 2.
  • At least two members of the quartet must be registered at HCNW, either as student, faculty and/or staff.
  • This year there are two categories: A) mixed quartets who have formed just for this contest, and B) quartets who have performed together before the HCNW weekend.
  • Sign-ups will be limited to the first 15 quartets. (Sign-ups will close at 4:30 pm on Saturday, if not previously max-ed out.)
  • Quartets may form and prepare in advance of the weekend, or may form and prepare during the weekend. You must choose a name by which you will be introduced!
  • Each mixed quartet will sing one song in the contest Saturday evening on July 17, which begins at 8:30 pm in the Schneebeck Auditorium on campus.
  • Any song may be sung; "barbershoppy" barbershop arrangements are preferred but not required! Please do not sing longer than three minutes.
  • Ballots will be distributed to all audience members (who are not contestants in the contest) for voting on placement. The first and second place quartets will be determined by written ballot of said audience following the final contestant. Criteria for voting is...whomever the audience prefers!
  • First and second place quartets will be announced during the Ice Cream Social, after the faculty quartets have sung (to give adequate time to count the ballots without using up valuable show time).
  • Winning quartets will receive certificates of commendation for each member, suitable for framing!
