From Jerry... "This was my first time at HCNW.  I now regret all those years I missed...The setting and the food were great. The knowledge base of the presenters was incredible.
I can't think of any class that did not exceed my expectations. You gathered a lot of talented people to present.  I had great opportunities to meet and converse with exciting, knowledgeable people and I came away pretty jacked up.  I hope that I can transfer at least a portion of what I learned to our chorus."

Harmony College Northwest 2011 was FANTASTIC!

"And a good time was had by all!"

2011 was another successful year of Harmony College Northwest. We had over 260 students; more than any previous year! Vocal Spectrum, The New Originals, Frenzy and Northwest Vocal Project rocked the house at our two-count-'em-two shows. The weather even cooperated with abundant sunshine (something that has been in short supply this summer!). For a wrap-up newsletter of HCNW 2011, click here.

A huge thank-you to the amazing faculty members and coaches who helped out this year. You are ALL part of the incredible bounty of talent we have in our combined areas. And thank-you to our students, who once again came to soak up this unique educational experience.

If you missed out on everything, we've uploaded many of the handouts from the weekend. Click here to see these materials.  Didn't get a chance to send in an evaluation? It's not too late! Just click here for a PDF or for a DOC form.

And hope to see you NEXT year at Harmony College Northwest 2012 on July 20-22, 2012.

Vocal Spectrum

HCNW 2011 Special Guests: Vocal Spectrum!

Vocal Spectrum is the 2006 Barbershop Harmony Society's Championship Quartet. Originally formed as a one-time educational quartet to sing for a local high school, these four have never stopped singing since! They've traveled to Germany, Holland, Sweden, Russia, England, Japan, New Zealand and throughout the United States performing on shows and at conventions, as well as teaching high school students about barbershop harmony. All four sing with the Ambassadors of Harmony (2004 International Chorus Champions). The quartet is the first to win all three possible BHS medals (Collegiate Quartet (2004), Men’s Quartet (2006), and Chorus Medal (2004).

In addition to Vocal Spectrum, we welcomed The New Originals, the 2010 Evergreen District Quartet Champions; Northwest Vocal Project (NVP), two-time (and current) EVG District Chorus Champs, two-time (and current) International Barbershop Youth Chorus Champs, and 12th place finishers at the 2010 BHS International contest in Philadelphia; and, Frenzy, the 2011 North Pacific Region 13 Quartet Champions.

Check this site often, as it will be updated with new information as faculty is set and courses are scheduled. In the meantime, if you've never been to HCNW, feel free to peruse this website with last year's information. It will give you a good idea of what's in store for you next year!

Who should attend Harmony College Northwest?

INDIVIDUALS
Students will find a wide selection of classes specifically chosen to meet their needs. Our faculty are experts in their areas and they are excited to be part of the 2011 team. Your brain will be stuffed to the brim with information and ideas! After you are registered and paid in full, you will receive details about how to access the music and learning tracks for the weekend.

CHORUSES
Bring your whole chorus, and experience four incredible coaching sessions. Additionally, you will all still have time to take some of the other terrific courses we offer. We suggest the "divide and conquer" method for those times when you don't have coaching: have your chorus members all take different classes, then compare notes and return to your regular rehearsal schedule with lots of tips and ideas. This is a coaching and class experience that will positively excite your chorus. Maximum: four small/medium choruses.

QUARTETS
We have an exciting array of coaches ready to move your quartet to a higher level of artistry and performance quality. We will have quartet coaching available during all sessions on Saturday...and even Sunday morning if you want to pack in one last session. If you want to step out for a session or two to sit in on some of the terrific classes we have on tap, that's not a problem. A maximum of 20 quartets can be accommodated, so DON'T DELAY!

DIRECTORS
For you we have set a delectable buffet of courses to choose from, and you get to pick which courses in the “Directors Track” are right for you. If you want to hop over and take a course in the General Sessions, that’s okay too.

HCNW ClassMUSICAL LEADERS
We have twelve courses specifically designed for musical leaders, as well as many other courses that will be of interest. Take courses on how to get more out of the music (and the chorus), or take some courses on how to be a coach. Fine-tune your musical ear with some of the vocal production classes, and of course, widen your network of other chapter music leaders to ask questions and tap for solutions.

SHOWMANSHIP & PRESENTATION LEADERS
HCNW has numerous instructors lined up who will help you add expression to your singing and enhance the visual part of your package. Between the courses in the Interpretation section and the Visual Plan section, you will find instructors to help tell the story in your song.

MUSIC EDUCATORS
Harmony College Northwest is an annual event that takes place on the beautiful University of Puget Sound campus in Tacoma, WA. Participants take classes and attend general sessions. Washington OSPI approved clock hours will be provided through the Washington Music Educators Association. Clock hours are free to WMEA members. Non-members who are interested pay $1.00 per hour claimed, plus a $5.00 processing fee. You may register online. Questions? Contact Marci Elefritz for details.
