Harmony College Northwest 2012
July 20-22 in Tacoma, WA

Harmony College Northwest 2011 was FANTASTIC, and more great barbershop and instruction is on the way for 2012!

2011 was another successful year of Harmony College Northwest (HCNW). We had over 260 attendees; more than any previous year! Vocal Spectrum, The New Originals, Frenzy and Northwest Vocal Project rocked the house at our two shows.  For a wrap-up newsletter of HCNW 2011, click here.

For 2012, we have a wonderful lineup of people who can deepen your appreciation for barbershop, and help you master even more of the craft.

Barbershop giants and legends like Joe Liles and Marge Bailey will share some of the wisdom and skill that they’ve picked up in their long and FULL careers in barbershop.

Joe Cerutti is director of a top ten chorus on both sides of the aisle: the Pride of Baltimore Chorus and the Alexandria Harmonizers.  Enthusiastic and accomplished, Joe will be here to share experiences with us, enlighten directors, and coach quartets.

For coaches and faculty members, we feature BHS Singing Judge Dave Tautkus, who offers amazing  techniques and interventions, and the ever-popular Raymond Schwarzkopf will be with us again. (By the way, Raymond is hoping to be in the Northwest between for the twelve days before HCNW, and he would love to come coach your chorus or quartet. You can reach him at raymond@themusicalfirm.org) Additionally, a last count we’ve lined up 13 Sweet Adelines International (SAI) or Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) judges, plus two former judges, to serve as coaches and instructors. More than a few gold medals will be walking around campus, as well.

We have many new courses and new presenters. This certainly isn’t “same ol’, same ol’ .”   We have classes specifically designed for many slices of the barbershop community. See Who Should Attend Harmony College NW, below.

You love to sing barbershop. You also love to learn your craft...getting smarter and more accomplished in this barbershop artform. Come to Harmony College Northwest this summer and do both of these wonderful pursuits. Polish your craft with top-flight presenters and instructors. Sing all weekend--in the general sessions, in class, in the halls, and out on the lawn. It's going to be a terrific weekend!

HCNW 2012 Special Guests: Masterpiece Quartet

Masterpiece Quartet

Masterpiece: In the world of vocal music, it signifies the marriage of multiple efforts into one seamless result. Masterpiece Quartet unites four talented musicians who have enjoyed success in various groups over their musical lifetimes into one quartet who offer a unique sound and experience for their audience.

Masterpiece Quartet is the 2011 Third Place Barbershop Harmony Society (BHS) medalist. All four members hail from the Masters of Harmony, eight-time BHS champion chorus. Masterpiece features: Rob Menaker, tenor; Patrick Haedtler, lead; Alan Gordon, baritone; and Brett Littlefield, bass.

We know you will be rewarded by Masterpiece: a quartet and sound of distinction!

Quadraphonics Quartet

Quadraphonics Quartet

In addition to Masterpiece, we welcome Quadraphonics, the 2011 Evergreen District Quartet Champions, to Harmony College Northwest!

Ken Potter, tenor, lives in Long Beach, CA. He is  a Certified Music Judge and a professional musician, song writer and arranger. Dean Waters, lead, lives in Vancouver, WA, and is also an educated musician but makes is living as Director of IT for a Portland, OR based media company. Steve Morin, bass, lives in Salem, OR. Steve is an accomplished musician in his own right and for the past 20 years has directed the Salem SenateAires Chorus (BHS). Bryan Jones, baritone, began his barbershop career in 1990 in Quincy, IL. He now is a member of the Salem SenateAires.

Who should attend Harmony College Northwest?

INDIVIDUALS
Students will find a wide selection of classes specifically chosen to meet their needs. Beginning barbershoppers, chorus singers, quartetters, directors, “music geeks”...we have lots of courses for every interest. See the course listing under Classes to get a peek. Our faculty are experts in their areas and they are excited to be part of the 2012 team. Your brain will be stuffed to the brim with information and ideas! After you are registered and paid in full, you will receive details about how to access the handouts, music, and learning tracks for the weekend.

CHORUSES
Bring your whole chorus, and experience up to four incredible coaching sessions. Additionally, you will all still have time to take some of the other terrific courses we offer. We suggest the "divide and conquer" method for those times when you don't have coaching: have your chorus members all take different classes, then compare notes and return to your regular rehearsal schedule with lots of tips and ideas. This is a coaching and class experience that will positively excite your chorus. Maximum: four small/medium choruses.

QUARTETS
We have an exciting array of coaches ready to move your quartet to a higher level of
artistry and performance quality. We will have quartet coaching available during every
session of the weekend except Session 2. In addition to great coaches, we have a host
of classes that can bring new skills and understandings to your quartet. Go to Classes,
and then see the Quartets section of the course descriptions to read about all of the
great courses. And there’s no time like the present to register. Why? Because quartets
registering and paying first will get strong preference in the assignment of coaches.

DIRECTORS
We have set a delectable buffet of courses for you to choose from. Read through the class descriptions and pick the courses that are right for you.

HCNW ClassMUSIC TEAM
We have many courses specifically designed for musical leaders. Take courses on how to get more out of the music (and your chorus), or take some courses on how to be a coach. Fine-tune your musical ear with some of the vocal production classes and, of course, widen your network of other chapter music leaders to ask questions and tap them for solutions.

EXPRESSION AND INTERPRETATION
HCNW has instructors who will help you add expression to your singing, enhance the visual part of your package, and help you tell the story in your song.

MUSIC EDUCATORS
Harmony College Northwest is an annual event that takes place on the beautiful University of Puget Sound campus in Tacoma, WA. Participants take classes and attend general sessions. Washington OSPI approved clock hours will be provided through the Washington Music Educators Association. Clock hours are free to WMEA members. Non-members who are interested pay $1.00 per hour claimed, plus a $5.00 processing fee. You may register online. Questions? Contact Marci Elefritz for details.
